Neuronal Activity Stimulated by Liquid Substrates Injection at Zusanli (ST36) Acupoint: The Possible Mechanism of Aquapuncture

Abstract: Aquapuncture is a modified acupuncture technique and it is generally accepted that it has a greater therapeutic effect than acupuncture because of the combination of the acupoint stimulation and the pharmacological effect of the drugs. However, to date, the mechanisms underlying the effects of aquapuncture remain unclear. We hypothesized that both the change in the local spatial configuration and the substrate stimulation of aquapuncture would activate neuronal signaling. Thus, bee venom, normal saline, and vi… Show more

“…Although some drugs have been successfully used to reduce intestinal injury in animal models, few can be used in clinical settings or may not be available during operations. Acupuncture has been used to control weight [31], reduce epilepsy [32], improve learning and memory disorders [33], and reduce pain [34][35][36][37]. EA is a complementary alternative medicine approach and involves applying an electrical current to acupuncture points.…”

“…After acupoint injection, the drug exerts a certain pressure on acupoints, prolongs the time for acupoints to acquire Qi, and strengthens the stimulation of acupoints. [ 35 , 36 ] Because of its convenience, safety, and effectiveness in clinical application, it is used as adjuvant therapy for many diseases. [ 4 , 37 ]…”

“…Goldman et al used microdialysis and high performance liquid chromatography to show that adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is degraded into adenosine to elicit its analgesic effect, was released at acupoints during MA [3]. Acupuncture has been used to control body weight [4], reduce epilepsy [5], ameliorate learning and memory impairment [6], and for pain management [7][8][9][10]. The analgesic effect of acupuncture activates the release of endogenous opiates [11] and adenosine [3].…”
