Neurological disease activity in multiple sclerosis patients with periphlebitis retinae

Abstract: ABSTRAm -Periphlebitis retinae (PR) in multiple sclerosis (MS) is seen as cuffs around veins in the otherwise normal retinae. The frequency of PR in MS varies considerably between different series, approximately from 5 to 25%.The aim of the present study was to investigate if PR, when present, is correlated to neurological disease activity. No similar study has been performed to the author's knowledge. The prevalence of PR in a hospital material of 135 MS patients was 15%, compared to the frequency of 5 % found… Show more

“…These have been demonstrated to be associated with risk of cerebral vascular disease even after adjusting for systemic vascular risk factors [20]. Quantitative retinal blood vessel metrics are potential markers of MS based on the known clinical relationships between MS and retinal vessel inflammation [17,21,22], and between MS and ganglion cell loss, which potentially decreases metabolic demand [23,24]. However, these relationships have not been thoroughly explored using OCT.…”

“…Its presence is thought to be more common in active stages of the disease and its pathogenesis may share commonalities with perivenular inflammation in typical MS plaques 95,96,98,99. Retinal periphlebitis in MS is typically mild and may not have any clinical manifestations; more severe cases may be seen in disorders such as sarcoid, syphilis, toxoplasmosis, Eale disease, and idiopathic uveitis 100…”

“…Quantitative retinal blood vessel metrics are potential markers of MS due to a known clinical relationship between MS and retinal vessel inflammation [ 13 , 14 , 15 ], and between MS and RGC loss, which potentially decreases the metabolic demand [ 16 , 17 ]. Structural and physiological abnormalities have been reported in the retina in pwMS [ 18 ].…”
