Neurologic Outcomes Following Care in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

Abstract: Purpose of review With increasing survival of children requiring admission to pediatric intensive care units (PICU), neurodevelopmental outcomes of these patients are an area of increased attention. Our goal was to systematically review recently published literature on neurologic outcomes of PICU patients. Recent Findings Decline in neurofunctional status occurs in 3%–20% of children requiring PICU care. This proportion varies based on primary diagnosis and severity of illness, with children admitted for pri… Show more

“…Additionally, from birth to age 2 years, myelination and rapid synapse formation are the most active and important processes of cortical development (Kinney et al, 1988;Huttenlocher and Dabholkar, 1997). This all suggests that the timing of neurodevelopmental assessments may also be critical as survivors of childhood critical illness may "grow into" their cognitive deficits if foundational neurodevelopment is affected (Caprarola et al, 2017;Sobotka et al, 2018;Choong, 2019).…”

“…In 2009, Rennick et al . conducted a systematic review of the psychological outcomes but excluded studies on functional PICU outcome 11 ; whilst other systematic reviews have focused on a single outcome 12,13 . A systematic review of multiple long‐term outcomes of PICU may help ensure the optimal use of PICU resources to benefit the most children, whilst minimising long‐term risks.…”

“…The cases presented above include children with prolonged hospitalizations, periods of hypoxia, and multiple surgical and invasive interventions. All of these factors increase the risk of abnormal neurodevelopmental outcomes [12].…”
