Neuroimaging findings of postnatally acquired Zika virus infection: a pictorial essay

Abstract: Zika virus (ZIKV) is a mosquito-borne arbovirus from the Flaviviridae family, first discovered in 1947. There has been no report of severe complications caused by this virus in humans until recently. However, it is confirmed now that prenatally acquired ZIKV infection may cause severe congenital brain abnormalities in the infected fetuses. In addition, there has been an increasing number of reports during recent years about the causal relationship between postnatally acquired ZIKV infection and severe neurolog… Show more

“…Spinal cord involvement in ZIKV can vary, and previous reports have described different forms of involvement. 11,17,27,28 Clinical symptoms are diverse and depend on the location and extension of the lesion. We can speculate that ZIKV might also specifically affect the anterior horns of the spinal cord (Fig 3), leading to a motor neuron syndrome, similar to the West Nile virus.…”

“…26 Other forms of spinal involvement have been described, such as those present in acute transverse myelitis, which usually involves the spinal cord in Ͼ3 segments lengthwise and more than two-thirds of its surface area. 17,28 Myelitis can also be identified as diffuse lesions with varying sizes that may affect any portion of the spinal cord. Contrast enhancement may be seen in acute lesions.…”

“…Other rare neurological manifestations of postnatal ZIKV infection, such as myelitis/myelopathy, meningoencephalitis, optic neuropathy, sensorineural hearing loss, and unspecified polyneuropathy, have been associated with ZIKV infection, reflecting the virus affinity for nervous tissues even in postnatal infections. In some cases, ZIKV seems to persist for longer periods in serum when a neurological manifestation is present …”

“…There are many pieces of evidence for the close relationship between the GBS and ZIKV infection [4,12]. Some other neurologic complications such as meningoencephalitis, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, acute myelitis, and transverse myelitis have been reported during ZIKV infection [12,[48][49][50].…”
