Neurogenic Tumors of the Mediastinum: A Report of 60 Cases

Abstract: OBJECTIVES:To analyze retrospectively 60 patients (13 infants and children, 47 adults -21 men and 39 women) with mediastinal neurogenic tumours admitted to Atatürk Centre for Chest Disease and Chest Surgery, Ankara, Turkey between 1988 and 1999. This comprised 21.2% of 283 patients who had surgical operations for all mediastinal masses during the same period. PATIENTS AND METHODS:The patients ranged from four to 67 years of age. Thirteen patients were younger than 15 years and 47 were 15 years of age or older.… Show more

“…Before video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) was used, the preferred surgical procedure for resection of posterior mediastinal benign masses was the high posterolateral thoracotomy [5]. VATS is actually considered the surgical approach of choice for diagnosing and resecting tumors smaller than 7 cm without signs of malignancy since it has better outcomes in terms of surgical procedure, amount of blood loss, length of drainage time, and length of hospital stay [6] [7].…”

“…If left untreated the tumour will continue to increase in size; hence, prompt management would affect the prognosis. Thoracotomy via the posterolateral approach has been the conventional surgical technique for resection of these posterior mediastinal masses 21. At present, video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery is the preferred technique for the diagnosis and management of benign posterior mediastinal masses, as it is less invasive and results in fewer lung complications and a shorter hospital stay although this technique needs to be standardised, as evidenced by the reported high rate of conversion for technical reasons 22.…”

“…The tumour will continue to increase in size if left untreated; hence, prompt management would affect the prognosis. Thoracotomy via the posterolateral approach has been in practice for long as a conventional surgical technique for resection of these posterior mediastinal masses 9 . Now days, video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery is the preferred technique for the diagnosis and management of benign posterior mediastinal masses, as it is less invasive and results in fewer lung complications and a shorter hospital stay.…”
