Neuroendocrine Tumor in a Horseshoe Kidney

Abstract: Renal neuroendocrine tumors (NET) are rare neoplasms of unknown histogenesis. To the best of our knowledge, 40 such cases have been described, 11 of which arising in horseshoe kidneys (HSK). We report an additional case of a NET associated with a HSK occurring in a 45-year-old man. A clinicopathological review of the reported cases together with an updated follow-up of such tumors arising in HSK is provided. The present data show that NET associated with HSK present a better prognosis than those occurring in n… Show more

“…Forty‐eight studies were included in our final analysis (Figure 1). These included six registry studies 1,2,6–9 20 analyses of previously published cases, 10–29 and 22 case series 30–51 . The paucity of large cohort or population studies yielded by our literature search is a testament to the extreme rarity of renal NENs.…”

“…Renal NET occurring in a horseshoe kidney also appear to be more benign than those occurring in a normal kidney 23 . The calculated relative risk of developing a NET in a horseshoe kidney was reported as 62 by Krishnan et al, 18 120 by Motta et al 19 and 82 by Begin et al 18,19,23 The relative risk of 120 was based on 40 published cases in the literature at the time. Because of the requisite of documenting laterality of the involved kidney on the SEER database, the apparent increased risk of developing renal NET in a horseshoe kidney could be not confirmed in the larger registry studies 2,6 .…”

“…The relative risk of carcinoid tumours in individuals with horseshoe kidneys compared to individuals with normal kidneys ranges from 62 to 120 [34, 41, 42]. There are 8 cases of primary renal carcinoid tumour associated with horseshoe kidneys in our review [10, 13, 18, 26, 27, 29].…”
