Neuroendocrine Neoplasms of the Lung: A Prognostic Spectrum

Abstract: The grade of malignancy of NE tumors was upgraded in the following order: TC, AC, LCNEC, and SCLC. No prognostic difference was noted between LCNEC and SCLC. The high-grade NE histology uniformly indicated poor prognosis regardless of its histologic type.

“…For TC, AC, LCNEC and SCLC, the male proportions were 52.2%, 80.5%, 100% and 76.5%. These results were fairly comparable to the results of a recent large-scale multi-institute study by Asamura et al (Asamura et al, 2006). The general present symptoms of these patients included cough (63.1%), hemoptysis (26.7%), dyspnea (15.9%), chest pain (13.6%), fever (6.3%) and headache (2.3%).…”

“…It still exists controversy regarding the independent prognostic factors for overall survival (OS). Several authors pointed out that lymph node involvement, histology and tumor size were the important and independent factors influencing the prognosis (Lim et al, 2005;Asamura et al, 2006;Filosso et al, 2013). The aim of this study was to describe the clinical characteristics and independent prognostic factors of Chinese patients with pulmonary NET.…”

“…52 Difficulty of diagnosis in high-grade neuroendocrine carcinoma is thought to occur as a result of variety of reasons, including the continuum of cell size and morphology between small cell carcinoma and large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma, and poor sampling and tissue artifacts. 53 We propose that one of the main reasons why there are differences between observers in histological diagnosis of high-grade neuroendocrine carcinoma may be the presence of tumors shown in Figure 1c in this study.…”

“…12,20,21 The present study is a systematic review and a meta-analysis of trials to assess the efficacy of targeted agents in patients with advanced NET. NETs are a heterogeneous disease arising from various primary sites such as the small intestine or other sites of the gastrointestinal tract, and the lung, 30,31 therefore their management is complicated by a different clinical presentations, clinical disease course, symptoms and degree of aggressiveness. 3 In our analysis, target agents improved the PFS and OS of advanced NETs patients compared with control group.…”
