“…The study was aimed at examining whether there are sexual maturation-related alterations in the responses of female sex hormones (b-oestradiol and progesterone), testosterone and growth hormone. It has been suggested that the pattern of the growth hormone response should be related to the pubertal growth spurt (see Rogol 1980) and of testosterone to the adrenarche coinciding with sexual maturation (see Wierman and Crowley 1986). To characterize possible alterations in general endocrine status, related to intense production of sex hormones, the responses of cortisol and insulin were also studied.…”

“…The contribution of anabolic influences also arises in girls during sexual maturation due to the fact that testosterone appears in blood of girls in detectable amounts at maturity stage 2. Further increases in testosterone levels occur around the age of 12 to 13 years reflecting adrenarche (Wierman and Crowley, 1986). Simultaneously, in females, the anabolic action of testosterone enhances the dependence on oestrogens (Danhaive and Rousseau, 1988).…”

“…Gonadal maturation is by far the most important of these components, since it orchestrates the appearance of secondary sexual characteristics via steroidogenesis and ensures the ability to reproduce via gametogenesis (Wierman and Crowley, 1986). Sex hormones stimulate growth hormone secretion (Marie, et al, 1994;Rogol, 1996) which in turn is essential for the adolescent growth spurt.…”

“…[88][89][90][91] Of the number reviewed, it was Knorr et al, 92 who best provided information about shifts in testosterone level related to adolescence. In turn, their data furnished external evidence useful in validating the AVC model.…”
