This study examined the motor proficiency and physical activity levels of young children with low levels of perceived self-efficacy regarding their participation in physical activities. This group (n=48) was compared with 400 of their peers in Grades 4-8 attending the same schools and also with a group (n=44) who reported high levels of perceived self-efficacy. Although none of the students with poor self-efficacy had been identified by their schools as having a learning or behavioural disorder, these children were found to have characteristics which are typical of children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD). These findings suggest that an instrument which asks children about their confidence when participating in physical leisure activities, and their enjoyment of those same activities may have potential as a possible screening tool for DCD. RÉSUMÉCette étude portait sur l'habileté motrice et les niveaux d'activité physique chez de jeunes enfants qui percevaient leur efficacité personnelle comme étant faible lorsqu'ils participaient à des activités physiques. On a comparé les performances de ce groupe (N=48) à celles de 400 pairs de la 4e à la 8e année fréquentant les mêmes écoles ainsi qu'à un groupe (N=44) dont le niveau de perception d'efficacité personnelle était élevé. Chez les élèves dont l'efficacité personnelle perçue était faible, aucun trouble d'apprentissage ou de comportement n'avait auparavant été dépisté à l'école. Cependant, cette étude a permis de démontrer que ces enfants présentaient des caractéristiques typiques des enfants ayant des troubles de coordination liés à la croissance. Ces résultats suggèrent qu'il serait utile de mettre au point un instrument permettant de demander aux enfants leur degré de confiance lorsqu'ils participent à des activités de loisir physiques et dans quelle mesure ils apprécient ces activités. Un tel instrument serait susceptible de dépister les troubles de coordination liés à la croissance.
