Neurochemical comparison of synaptic arrangements of parvocellular, magnocellular, and koniocellular geniculate pathways in owl monkey (Aotus trivirgatus) visual cortex

Abstract: As in other primates, the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) of owl monkeys contains three anatomically and physiologically distinct relay cell classes, the magnocellular (M), parvocellular (P), and koniocellular (K) cells. M and P LGN cells send axons to the upper and lower tiers of layer IV, and K cells send axons to the cytochrome oxidase (CO) blobs of layer III and to layer I of primary visual cortex (V1). Our objective was to compare the synaptic arrangements made by these axon classes. M, P, and K axons we… Show more

“…This system has been extensively studied; several reviews describe it in detail (91)(92)(93)(94)(95)(96)(97)(98). Many of the K ganglion cells have bistratified dendritic arbors, as a result of which they receive both ON and OFF inputs from bipolar cells.…”

“…Post-embedding TEM immunocytochemistry was performed on thin sections of rat liver using anti-P2Y 1 and P2Y 2 antibodies obtained from Alomone Labs, and anti-rabbit secondary antibody conjugated with 25-nm gold beads (Electron Microscopy Sciences, Fort Washington, PA) as described in Shostak et al [2003] with modifications. Rat liver sections were fixed with 0.5-2% glutaraldehyde and 4% paraformaldehyde and embedded in EPON resine (Electron Microscopy Sciences).…”

“…Visual perception is often described as a two-scale process, sometimes classified as the parvocellular (p) and magnocellular (m) subsystems. This is both an anatomical distinction 6 and a physiological distinction. 7,8 In primate vision, the p-channel is associated with high acuity and coarse contrast sensitivity, while the m-channel is associated with coarse spatial resolution and high contrast sensitivity.…”
