Neuroblastoma between 1990 and 2014 in the Netherlands: Increased incidence and improved survival of high-risk neuroblastoma

Abstract: Long-term trends in neuroblastoma incidence and survival in unscreened populations are unknown. We explored trends in incidence, stage at diagnosis, treatment and survival of neuroblastoma in the Netherlands from 1990 to 2014. Methods: The Netherlands Cancer Registry provided data on all patients aged <18 years diagnosed with a neuroblastoma. Trends in incidence and stage were evaluated by calculating the average annual percentage change (AAPC). Univariate and multivariable survival analyses were performed for… Show more

“…Neuroblastoma (NB) is the most common extracranial solid tumor occurring in children 1 . Over 75% of patients are categorized as high-risk with a poor overall 5-year survival of less than 50%, despite intensive treatment with high-dose chemotherapy followed by surgery, autologous stem cell transplantation, radiotherapy and immunotherapy 2 , 3 . Resection of high-risk NB is associated with a risk for serious surgical complications, since the tumor often encases major blood vessels leading to severe hemorrhage and/or unplanned organ damage 4 , 5 .…”

“… 1 The incidence of neuroblastoma is about 11–13 in 1 million among children less than 15 years old in developed countries. 2 In China, neuroblastoma represents approximately 10% of childhood tumors, with an incidence of approximately 7.7 cases per 1 million children. 3 Neuroblastoma is the primary cause of cancer death in childhood, accounting for approximately 15% of all pediatric cancer mortality.…”

“…Survival rate could be achieved at least 95% in patients with a non–high‐risk (low‐ and intermediate‐risk) neuroblastoma 8 . Conversely, only 50% of patients with high‐risk neuroblastoma achieve long‐term survival 9,10 …”
