Neurobehavioral assessment before birth

Abstract: The complexities of neurobehavioral assessment of the fetus, which can be neither directly viewed nor manipulated, cannot be understated. Impetus to develop methods for measuring fetal neurobehavioral development has been provided by the recognition that individual differences in neurobehavioral functioning do not originate with birth and acceptance of the key contribution of the antenatal period to postnatal life. Research has centered around four aspects of fetal functioning: heart rate, motor activity, beha… Show more

“…We collected fetal data only at one time point during gestation. As DiPietro has shown, using multiple assessments throughout pregnancy (DiPietro, 2005), patterns in the associations between fetal behaviors at different ages and infant temperament can change. A single assessment such as ours may have lead to spurious results.…”

“…39,54,62 DiPietro states that an emerging consensus recognizes the fact that "fetal neurobehavioral reflects the developing nervous system", however we don't know yet the conceptual and methodological strengths and weaknesses of fetal assessments proposed. 65 We are not ready yet to predict the neurological outcome in fetuses between two extreme situations, optimal or very abnormal. The predictive value for a favorable outcome of a complete neurobehavioral pattern in fetus as from 22 gestational weeks on should be demonstrated.…”
