“…Neuraminidase inhibitors represent a new class of antivirals specific for influenza A and B, with few side-effects. They have been shown to be effective in prophylaxis and treatment of influenza (Hayden et al, 1997;Jefferson, Dimicheli, Deeks, & Rivetti, 2001;National Institute for Clinical Excellence, 2000;O'Brien, Goeree, Blackhouse, Smeja, & Loeb, 2003). Used as prophylaxis prior to an influenza epidemic, a difference in infection rates from 73% in a placebo group to 13% in individuals on zanamivir has been documented.…”
