“…Thus, patients with MDD have consistently demonstrated worse performance than healthy controls in verbal memory (Kaymak et al, 2010;MacQueen et al, 2003;Vythilingam et al, 2004;Sheline et al, 1999), recollection memory (Kaymak et al, 2010;MacQueen et al, 2003;Sheline et al, 1999), and in tests of visual memory (Kaymak et al, 2010;Reischies and Neu, 2000;Grant et al, 2001;Neu et al, 2005;van Wingen et al, 2010). Similar deficits have been reported in patients with late-onset depression in some (Hickie et al, 2005), but not all (Ballmaier et al, 2008;Greenberg et al, 2008), studies.…”

“…Contrary to our expectation, no differences were observed in the PFC or ACC during emotional encoding or recognition, indicating that activation of these regions during this task may be less related to clinical course. Because the lateral PFC has been found to be hyperactivated during retrieval of mood-incongruent stimuli in symptomatic phases of MDD and after recovery (Van Wingen et al, 2010), our results suggest a trait-related rather than a coursepredictive role of this region in memory processing. Activation of the medial PFC and posterior cingulate cortex during encoding of negative pictures has been associated with worsening of symptoms over an 18-month period (Foland-Ross et al, 2014).…”

“…One study has suggested that the role of the fusiform gyrus and prefrontal cortex in memory processing may contribute to cognitive vulnerability to depression. 36 Right fusiform activation in response to happy faces is reduced in patients with MDD compared with healthy controls, 37 and modulation of activity in this face-processing sensory area has been suggested to contribute to changes in the attentional salience of such emotional stimu li. 38 Our finding of disrupted white matter integrity under this gyrus provides structural evidence of impairment in the neural circuit responsible for face recognition in patients with MDD from a brain connectivity point of view.…”
