Neural ECM mimetics

Abstract: The consequence of numerous neurological disorders is the significant loss of neural cells, which further results in multilevel dysfunction or severe functional deficits. The extracellular matrix (ECM) is of tremendous importance for neural regeneration mediating ambivalent functions: ECM serves as a growth-promoting substrate for neurons but, on the other hand, is a major constituent of the inhibitory scar, which results from traumatic injuries of the central nervous system. Therefore, cell and tissue replace… Show more

“…A collagen-based scaffold that incorporated the soluble Nogo receptor improved recovery in a model of penetrating brain injury (Elias & Spector, 2015). Based on these results, a promising area is the potential uses of ECM and ECM-derived peptides that improve neuronal regeneration and functional recovery (Estrada, Tekinay, & Muller, 2014).…”

“…In the stripe assay, the CSPG-positive stripes may remain the less preferred substrate even after Reelin application. Future studies might address this by using neural ECM scaffolds to more closely mimic the 3D extracellular environment (Estrada et al, 2014). Because reeler dendrites avoid the MZ, and the stripe assay data suggested a Reelin-CSPG interaction affecting dendrites, we examined dendritic growth ratios in wild-type (with Reelin) and reeler (without Reelin) cortical explants treated with and without chondroitinase.…”

“…Rajesh et al thought the biological processes of glioma were closely correlated with the remolding of ECM and the proteolysis of ECM participated in the invasion. While Estrada et al hold that ECM served as a growth‐promoting substrate for the neuron in the central nervous system. Meanwhile, ECM can activate the growth factor, regulate proliferation, and promote invasion in brain tumors .…”
