Neural crest cell galvanotaxis: New data and a novel approach to the analysis of both galvanotaxis and chemotaxis

Abstract: The galvanotaxis response of neural crest cells that had migrated out of the neural tube of a 56-hr-old quail embryo onto glass coverslips was observed using time-lapse video microscopy. These cells exhibit a track velocity of about 7 microns/min and actively translocate toward the negative pole of an imposed DC electric field. This nonrandom migration could be detected for fields as low as 7 mV/mm (0.4 mV/cell length). We find that this directional migration is independent of the speed of migration and have g… Show more

“…Moreover, specific cellular responses to windows of V mem have also been documented (Gruler and Nuccitelli, 1991;Jurkat-Rott et al, 2009;McDonald et al, 1972). Our data suggest the presence of a narrow hyperpolarization range that specifies the V mem signal for eye induction (Fig.…”

“…2C) creates an electric field (Fig. 6E) that may lead to large-scale bioelectric conditions that trigger galvanotaxis of neurons (Gruler and Nuccitelli, 1991;McCaig et al, 2002). However, it is unlikely that induction of axonal growth by ion transport is the only mechanism required because, in the PMA rescue experiments, many more tails exhibited rescued axon growth (83%) than exhibited regeneration (36%).…”

“…Mean migration rate and directedness were quantified over 5 h (Gruler and Nuccitelli, 1991;Zhao et al, 1996a). The angle that each cell moved with respect to the imposed EF vector was measured.…”
