Neural Correlates of Urinary Retention in Lateral Medullary Infarction

Abstract: PurposeThe brainstem plays an important role in the control of micturition, and brainstem strokes are known to present with micturition dysfunction. Micturition dysfunction in cases of lateral medullary infarction (LMI) is uncommon, but often manifests as urinary retention. In this study, we investigated the neuro-anatomical correlates of urinary retention in patients with LMI.MethodsThis was a hospital-based retrospective study conducted in the neurology unit of a quaternary-level teaching hospital. Inpatient… Show more

“…Various methods and learning algorithms for motion recognition have been proposed. Most studies have used static algorithms such as ANNs ( Karmonik et al, 2019 ; Kim et al, 2020 ; Nikkola et al, 2020 ; Prabhakar et al, 2019 ) and K-means clustering ( Baser et al, 2020 ; Fraley and Raftery, 2002 ; Moon and Cho, 2021 ), or dynamic time warping ( Powar and Chemmangat, 2019 ) in combination with algorithms. However, a time series algorithm should be used to predict or classify dynamically changing time series data.…”

“…The PAG occupies an important position between the cerebrum and bladder to decide micturition ( Prabhakar et al, 2019 ). The switch between urine storage and voiding in the lower urinary tract is mediated by the spinobulbospinal reflex under normal conditions ( Fowler et al, 2008 ; Griffiths and Fowler, 2013 ).…”

“…In rats, this connection allows direct command to the POSC to initiate micturition [43]. However, in humans, and cats and dogs and other primates, the PAG does not decide micturition based on bladder filling information alone, and are subject to many brain structures [31,44]. Interesting, though, rats have also shown some degree of social modulation of stress retention [45,46].…”
