Schizophrenia is a kind of serious mental disease, which may cause major impairment in patients’ social-cognitive ability. It has been found that pragmatic ability in schizophrenic patients is often impaired, especially for figurative language comprehension. Figurative language refers to irony, metaphor, idiom and the like. People with schizophrenia tend to interpret figurative language as its literal meaning, which is called schizophrenic concretism. By reviewing extant literature, we found that the literature concerning this topic mainly consists of two parts: behavioral studies and brain-imaging studies. The behavioral studies mainly explore how clinical factors and cognitive ability have an impact on figurative language comprehension. Brain-imaging studies mainly discuss hemisphere lateralization in schizophrenia and whether theory of mind network in schizophrenic patients is different from that of normal groups. We conclude that future research should further explore the relationship among figurative language comprehension, cognitive ability and clinical factors, and also reveal related neural mechanism.

Poczucie humoru ma pozytywny wpływ na funkcjonowanie psychiczne i społeczne człowieka, poprzez wspieranie kompetencji interpersonalnych oraz efektywnego radzenia sobie w sytuacjach trudnych. Celem pracy jest przedstawienie dotychczasowych badań na temat przetwarzania treści humorystycznych przez osoby chorujące na schizofrenię, związanego z deficytami poznawczymi towarzyszącymi chorobie oraz ich podłożem neurobiologicznym. Rozumienie humoru oraz adekwatne posługiwanie się nim wymaga wielu umiejętności językowych oraz pozajęzykowych, obejmujących przetwarzanie sygnałów z otoczenia społecznego, takich jak adekwatne rozpoznawanie komunikatów emocjonalnych, rozumienie kontekstu sytuacji humorystycznej, prawidłowe wnioskowanie o stanach mentalnych innych osób. Sprawne posługiwanie się językiem metaforycznym pozwala na doświadczanie rozbawienia wynikającego z nieścisłości, różnorodnych interpretacji semantycznych, ironii i sarkazmu. Skłonność do nadmiernego konkretyzmu obecna w zaburzeniach rozumienia treści niedosłownych i złożonych semantycznie struktur językowych oraz inne deficyty poznawcze chorujących na schizofrenię często utrudniają posługiwanie się komunikatami humorystycznymi. Bliższe poznanie mechanizmów regulujących efektywne posługiwanie się humorem może pomóc w tworzeniu narzędzi terapeutycznych, mających na celu poprawę efektywności komunikacji pacjentów chorujących na schizofrenię oraz pozytywnie wpłynąć na ich funkcjonowanie społeczne.
