Neural Basis of tDCS Effects on Auditory Verbal Hallucinations in Schizophrenia

Abstract: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been reported to ameliorate auditory hallucinations that are nonresponsive/minimally responsive to antipsychotic treatment in schizophrenia. The neurobiological basis of the tDCS effects in ameliorating auditory hallucinations is yet to be explored. In this case report, for the first time, using the novel method for noninvasive assessment of cortical plasticity, we demonstrate potential neuroplasticity effect of tDCS in improving treatment-resistant auditory h… Show more

“…This is why tDCS sessions were maintained for 3 years (Andrade, 2013). A more recent case study by Nawani et al (2014) replicated these findings and supports the use of tDCS in the treatment of auditory hallucinations. Another case study, with a pregnant patient (a case where tDCS might be particularly appropriate as many antipsychotic medications are considered teratogenic while there are no significant contraindications for tDCS), has observed a significant decrease in auditory hallucinations after 5 days of auditory cortex tDCS (Shenoy et al, 2015).…”

“…Nawani et al [41]. and Shivakumar et al [42] used similar treatment protocols (5 days of tDCS, two sessions per day, with cathode over the left temporoparietal junction and the anode over the left DLPFC, describing improvement in auditory hallucinations).…”

“…Hierbei konnte die Wirksamkeit der tDCS für relevante psychopathologische Symptome der Schizophrenie gezeigt werden, z. B. akustische Halluzinationen (11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17), optische Halluzinationen (18), katatone Schizophrenie (19) und Negativsyndrom (20).…”
