The present study aims to determine the effect of Betty Neuman's systemic model on the anxiety of patients undergoing endoscopy. This randomized control trial investigation involved 44 participants recruited from the endoscopy center of Golestan Province Hospital in the 2022, specifically those prescribed for endoscopic procedures. The data collection instruments employed in this research encompassed a demographic characteristics questionnaire focusing on age, gender, education, and occupation, as well as Spielberger's state-trait anxiety questionnaire (form Y) (STAI-Y). The pre-intervention anxiety levels were 111.41 (SD=17.61) in the intervention group and 109.27 (SD=6.64) in the control group. The Mann-Whitney U test indicated no statistically significant difference in the anxiety levels between the two groups before the intervention (P=0.29). Following the intervention, the anxiety levels were 116.56 (SD=12.25) in the intervention group and 111.95 (SD=4.70) in the control group. The independent t-test revealed a significant difference between the two groups (P<0.01). Furthermore, the Wilcoxon test demonstrated no significant difference in anxiety levels within the control group before and after the intervention (P=0.36), whereas a significant difference was observed in the intervention group before and after the intervention (P<0.01). Moreover, the ANCOVA revealed a statistically significant difference between the two groups after accounting for the pre-test effects (Eta=0.58, P<0.01). This indicates that 58% of the variance in post-test changes can be attributed to the training provided based on the Betty Neuman's systemic model. In conclusion, the implementation of Betty Neuman's systemic model has proven to be effective in reducing anxiety levels among patients undergoing endoscopy. The demonstrated efficacy of Betty Neuman's model suggests that nursing models can serve as a cost-efficient, impactful, and secure treatment approach in patient care.

Safe medication management is particularly challenging among polymedicated home-dwelling older adults after hospital discharge. This study aimed to identify and categorise the stressors experienced and reconstitution strategies adopted by older adults, their informal caregivers, and healthcare professionals as they manage older adults’ medications after hospital discharge. A primary study collected the perspectives of 28 older adults, 17 informal caregivers, and 13 healthcare professionals using a qualitative descriptive design. The Neuman Systems Model was used as the basis for a secondary deductive content analysis. Findings revealed that post-discharge medication management at home involved numerous stressors, often including dysfunctions in communication, collaboration, and coordination between the multiple stakeholders involved. Reconstitution strategies for safe medication management were not always successful or satisfactory and were sometimes identified as stressors themselves. Older adults, informal caregivers, and healthcare professionals’ perspectives highlighted several potential opportunities for improving safe medication management through nurse-led, interprofessional, patient-centred practices.

Background: The crisis caused by the child's illness and hospitalization affects all family members. Fear, worry, and anxiety are common issues of hospitalized children’s mothers. Betty Newman's system model plays a vital role in adapting to stress detection and control. Objectives: This study aimed to examine the effect of the behavioral systems model on the concerns of mothers of children admitted to the surgical ward. Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted on 60 mothers of children admitted to the surgical ward of the Mousavi Hospital, Gorgan, Iran, in 2020. The participants were selected using convenience sampling and then divided into test and control groups using non-probability sampling. According to Neuman's systems model, participants in the test group received nursing care in 3 - 4 sessions (each lasting 30 - 45 minutes). Participants in the control group received only routine ward care. Data were collected using the Parental Concern Scale and analyzed with IBM SPSS Statistics 21 software using statistical tests (analysis of covariance, unpaired samples t-test, and paired sample test). Results: The mean score of maternal concerns before the intervention was 42.6 ± 3.06 in the control group and 43.21 ± 2.27 in the test group. The results of the independent samples t-test did not show any significant difference between the groups in terms of maternal concerns (P = 0.11). The mean post-intervention maternal concern score was 37.6 ± 2.71 and 41.716 ± 2.55 in the test and control groups, showing a significant difference between the groups as indicated by the t-test results (P < 0.01). However, the paired t-test outcomes showed no difference in the mean maternal concern score in the control group before and after the intervention (P = 0.92). In contrast, there was a significant difference in the mean maternal concern score in the test group before and after the intervention (P < 0.01). Conclusions: Given the effectiveness of Betty Neuman’s systems model, it can be used as a low-cost, effective care method to reduce maternal stress as the model was developed for understanding clients’ and caregivers’ needs and reducing their stress.
