New SMEs are very important to the economy of South Africa. Their failure rate at about 75% is one the highest in the world. Lack of finance is one of the primary reasons for the failure of new SMEs in South Africa. About 75% of all applications for bank credit by new SMEs are rejected. This objective of the paper was to investigate the determinants of credit approval for new SMEs. The survey method and self-administered questionnaires were used for data collection. 445 respondents took part in the survey. Data was analysed by logistic regression. The results indicate that managerial competencies, business information, networking, location, crime, business size and incorporation are significant determinants of credit approval.

SMEs contribute positively to economic growth, employment and poverty alleviation in South Africa. However, the failure rate of SMEs is very high in South Africa. One of the factors limiting the survival and growth of SMEs in South Africa is non-availability of debt financing. This study investigates the impact of firm and entrepreneurial characteristics on access to debt finance by SMEs in South Africa. Data was collected through self-administered questionnaire in a survey. The statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation and logistic regression. The results indicate that firm and entrepreneurial characteristics impact on access to debt finance by SMEs. The study recommends that SMEs owners/managers should be investment ready by providing collateral, attend seminars and training programs to improve on their managerial competence.

The Effects of Internal, External Environment and Entrepreneurship on the Performance of Social Enterprise: Focused on the Network Activity

The purpose of this study is to examine the factors influencing performance of internal, external environment and entrepreneurship in the social enterprise with network activity. This model tests various theoretical research hypotheses relating to performance of social enterprise, internal, external environment, entrepreneurship and network activity. The proposed model is analyzed to target social entrepreneurs. The results of hypothesis testing are as follows. First, organizational culture positively influence entrepreneurship. Second, environmental uncertainty positively influence entrepreneurship. Third, entrepreneurship positively influence managerial and social performance. Finally, organizational culture to entrepreneurship for high group of network activity is significantly larger than those for low group of network activity. In addition, environmental uncertainty to entrepreneurship for low group of network activity is significantly larger than those for high group of network activity.
