Do landowners realize (and privately fund) natural water retention measures (NWRM) on their own land? Why? And how are they capable of assessing the hydrological and ecological effects of these measures? The Czech case study presents the story of an individual farmer who decided to invest his private resources in water retention and biodiversity enhancement while continuing his farming practices. We describe the historical and geographical background of the case study as well as the farmer's motivations and beliefs. We also discuss the scaling-up potential of the presented case. Information for the case study was gathered with a mixed-methodology approach that combined official statistical sources of cadastral records, content analyses of local media articles, a field survey and communication with the farmer during an excursion to his farm. The intention is to show the alternative when considering NWRM implementation. This alternative is heading the same direction as public subsidy schemes. Private initiatives may support (instead of undermine) public policy goals, and they are often faster and cheaper.

Grobogan Regency is one of the areas in Central Java that experiences drought almost every year. However, Ngaram-aram Hamlet in Crewek Village in the Grobogan Regency almost has not affected by drought in the dry season due to some springs located in this area. Increasing the community participation in water management could be obtained by strengthening the social capital. The objective of this study is to determine the social capital variables in the management of springs by identifying: 1) trust and community solidarity in spring's management, 2) social Norms in spring's management, and 3) social networks in spring's management. The results of the research show that spring's management was carried out both physically and spiritually. Trust and solidarity in spring's management could be seen in regulating and distributing water to houses, and in contributing to the finance of spring's management. The existing social norm is in the form of command sand prohibitions in spring's management that contain social values, rewards and punishments. The social network in spring's management at Ngaram-aram appears in a special set of relationships among groups of people who utilize the springs with characteristics of relationships that could be used to interpret social behavior motives from the people involved in them. This network has economic function to obtain water for household and agricultural purposes, social function in security and socialization, and communication flow of information. Indicators of the social network existence could be seen from 1) individual centrality 2) individual closeness, and 3) togetherness between individuals.

In many countries around the globe, private freehold lands cover large areas. Conservation on these private lands, next to statutory protected areas, promises to play a critical role in efforts for reaching internationally agreed environmental protection targets. Lying at the heart of an emerging land system science, in which ecology, economics, geography, psychology, and other social sciences interact, private land conservation is reflecting the intertwined and multiscalar processes of our rapidly transforming world. Situated at this disciplinary meeting point, private land conservation invites a great breadth of approaches and cross-disciplinary work that offer deep insights into social and environmental change, often from surprising angles. Although many questions remain in private land conservation, we can now build on a large body of recent high-quality studies as we push this field forward in both research and practice. The Special Feature "Private Land Conservation-Landowner Motives, Policies, and Outcomes of Conservation Measures in Unprotected Landscapes" brings together contributions that explore the diversity of recent advances in private land conservation science. As an introduction to this Special Feature, first we are reviewing recent dynamics in important social-ecological drivers with bearing on private land conservation science. We go on to introduce the individual contributions to this Special Feature and then examine common themes as they are emerging from these papers, including the need for flexibility in conservation approaches, pursuit of community cobenefits of conservation, increasing consideration of environmental justice questions, and acknowledgment of the importance of social psychology in shaping private land conservation. We conclude with identification of knowledge gaps and recommendations for future research, as we advance from diagnostics to normative work in private land conservation science.
