Networked participatory online learning design and challenges for academic integrity in higher education

Abstract: A new multi-disciplinary degree program in education and information studies was developed to uniquely facilitate educators' capacity to be responsive to the demands of a digitally connected world. Charles Sturt University's Master of Education (Knowledge Networks and Digital Innovation) aims to develop agile leaders in new cultures of digital formal and informal learning. The co-construction of knowledge through interpersonal discourse creates a pedagogical tension between a focus on knowledge-based instructi… Show more

“…Therefore, the researchers conclude that educators need to aggressively educate online university students about the importance of academic honesty since it was concluded in this study that academic honesty or integrity is directly and strongly related to the learning quality. The latter conclusion is in agreement with (Bearman et al 2020);O'Connell, 2016;Tabsh et al, 2017) as mentioned in the literature review. The use of technology may minimize academic dishonesty and could enhance the learning quality through the assurance of authorship via different means (Amigud et al, 2017;Lee-Post and Hapke, 2017;Traoré et al, 2017).…”

“…Although different objectives yet essential to make sure that students who complete their bachelor's degrees have met the desirable outcomes (Bearman et al, 2020). According to O'Connell (2016), the present philosophy toward academic integrity is affected by policy activities, such as syllabi or course outlines emphasizing academic integrity and ethical rules or conduct. Academic integrity of students is also affected by the ability of academics to teach as well as enhance the students' knowledge and acceptance of academic integrity standards (O'Connell, 2016).…”

“…The design of online learning environments was another important aspect (In Figure 3, see concept paths social-activity-designknowledge, and interaction-social-environment-experience-online). Social interaction is a key factor in supporting learners and learning processes (Fisher & Baird, 2005), and changes in online networks require the application of innovative technological and pedagogical approaches to foster learning communities (Conley et al, 2017;O'Connell, 2016). For instance, Robinson et al (2020) argued that maintenance of a climate of care was significant for online learning which highlighted a need to revisit emotional and affective domains in online learning environments.…”

“…A collaborative learning environment is an interconnected virtual place of people, systems, and resources to support learners by using multiple tools to access educational resources [7]. The elements of collaborative learning environment are remix of different forms of technologies, devices, data repositories, information retrieval, information sharing, networks and communication [8]. Collaborative learning environment has many advantages, learners form groups, collaborate with each other and with educators, and content designed for interaction [9].…”
