This paper investigates how reticulate evolution contributes to a better understanding of human sociocultural evolution in general, and community formation in particular. Reticulate evolution is evolution as it occurs by means of symbiosis, symbiogenesis, lateral gene transfer, infective heredity, and hybridization. From these mechanisms and processes, we mainly zoom in on symbiosis and we investigate how it underlies the rise of (1) human, plant, animal, and machine interactions typical of agriculture, animal husbandry, farming, and industrialization;(2) diet-microbiome relationships; and (3) host-virome and other pathogen interactions that underlie human health and disease. We demonstrate that reticulate evolution necessitates an understanding of behavioral and cultural evolution at a community level, where reticulate causal processes underlie the rise of synergistic organizational traits.

The functional fermented foods containing live microorganisms and their components are necessary for the normal functioning of the human body as normal gut microbiota needs fuel from external microbial organisms and their nanostructures — membrane vesicles (MVs), excreting outside. The сoncept that MVs may contribute to astronauts’ health probably to the same extent as their parental microbial cells do and be a temporary substitute for living microbial cells until we know more about the behavior of microbes in the space environment. The advantage of MVs is that they are not alive and cannot be changed under unfavorable conditions as microbial organisms may be. As the model, we selected MVs of a robust to environmental factors kombucha multimicrobial culture (KMC), known for its health-promoting characteristics for humans. We exposed KMC on the International Space Station in a hybrid space/Mars-like environment for an initial proof-of-concept stage. In the exposure study, KMC has survived a long-term period in harsh conditions, and the MVs generated by post-flight kombucha community members did not acquire toxicity, despite the changed membrane composition in the environment imitated conditions on the Mars surface. This observation, together with our KMC metagenomic and comparative genomic analyses of the dominant KMC bacterium Komagataeibacter oboediens, showed that the ground reference sample and spaceexposed ones were similar in topology and maintained their stability. In the next stage, we assessed the fitness, safety, and biodistribution of MVs of post-flight K. oboediens and showed that they were altered, but the modifications in membrane structure did not result in toxicity acquisition. Our proof-of-concept strategy is discussed in this review in line with the literature.

Background: Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAb) is a WHO priority 1 critical pathogen. Despite early emergence of elevated CRAb rates in Israel, limited molecular data from this location are available. We searched for carbapenemases among 198 clinical Acinetobacter spp. from Israel between 2001 and 2006. Methods: Strains from 3 archives underwent whole-genome sequencing (Illumina NovaSeq on all, MinION on a subset) and computational analyses: assembly (Unicycler), annotation (prokka), identification (Kraken, rpoB similarity), search for carbapenemases (ResFinder, BLDB curation). Findings: A. baumannii (Ab) represented 179 (90.4%) Acinetobacter spp. Eighty-four Ab (46.9%) carried a carbapenemase: 38 (45.2%) blaOXA-72 (blaOXA-24-like); 28 (33.3%) blaOXA-23-like (20 blaOXA-23 and 8 blaOXA-225); 18 (21.5%) blaOXA-58 (16 from 2001-2). Carbapenemase rates increased yearly from 2002 (32%) to 2006 (67%). Eight species of non-baumannii Acinetobacter (NbA) accounted for 19 isolates (9.6%). Two of three A. junii contained blaOXA-58, one of which, Ajun-H1-3, isolated in January 2004, also possessed blaNDM-1. The pNDM-Ajun-H1-3 plasmid matched numerous NDM-positive plasmids reported from 2005 onwards in Acinetobacter spp. as well as Enterobacterales. Interpretation: We assessed carbapenemase diversity among Acinetobacter spp. in Israel from 2001-2006. Findings in Ab predate observations elsewhere: rapidly rising carbapenemase rates, driven by blaOXA-23-like and blaOXA-24-like genes replacing blaOXA-58. Among NbA, an A. junii isolated in 2004 carried blaNDM-1, making it the earliest NDM-positive isolate reported to date, preceding those from 2005 in India. Further research into blaNDM's emergence is warranted, in order to shed light on the evolution and spread of this and other antibiotic-resistance genes.
