Network selection in heterogeneous wireless networks based on Fuzzy Multiple criteria Decision Making

Abstract: Next generation wireless networks are expected to exhibit heterogeneity in terms of wireless access technologies, services and application requirements. These heterogeneous wireless access networks consist of the integration of various wireless networks especially Wi-Fi (WLAN), Wi-Max and 3G/B3G cellular networks. One of the challenging problems is to choose the optimal network depending upon the type of the demanding application. Vertical handoff occurs when a mobile terminal decides to switch to the selected… Show more

“…In such a scenario, no user should connect to SP 2 as SP 3 offers better utility at a cheaper or equal price (11). Hence, substituting s 2 = 0 in (20), (24), (28), and (30), within the coverage area of SP 3 and not in (18), (22), and (26) as they are beyond the coverage of SP 3, we obtain q 03 = q 13 = q 23 = q 33 = q 43 = 0.…”

“…In the presence of heterogeneous wireless networks, multiple path selection, i.e., multi-homing, based on QoS requirements and available signal-to-interference-plusnoise ratio (SINR) is proposed in [17]. In [18], a network selection algorithm, based on fuzzy MADM, in the presence of heterogeneous wireless networks is presented. A multi-criteria based vertical handover (HO) algorithm in the presence of heterogeneous networks is proposed in [19].…”

“…This fact made Wi‐Fi selection as an important criteria to be concerned in the research of vertical handover system. are the works that proposed several vertical handover systems that contain various wireless link quality metrics for the selection of a qualified AP. However, all these work only propose the definition of their metrics and the way to derive the corresponding variables without any justifications or in depth research on usability and applicability.…”

“…Another paper [18] is dealing with a network selection algorithm based on Fuzzy Multiple Attribute Decision Making. That algorithm considers the factors of Received Signal Strength (RSS), monetary cost, bandwidth, velocity and user preference.…”
