Network security assessment - an important task in distribution systems with dispersed generation

Abstract: Network security assessment is decisively based on the protection security. Dispersed generation is increasing in distribution networks. This development is affecting the protection behaviour adversely. Maloperation of protection relays becomes likely. Thus methods of protection security assessment are necessary to cope with the new network conditions of distributed generation and all their impacts. This paper is presenting such a methodology using fully software assisted procedures. A systematic protection se… Show more

“…There are only three main challenging issues in solving OCRC problem: (i) high speed operation of relays, (ii) the selectivity that obligates each relay to operate only when a fault occurs in the corresponding protection zone of the relay and, (iii) reliability that necessitate the need for assigning appropriate backup relay. The above-mentioned issues directly affect the protection system dependability and in a higher level, power system security and reliability [38,40]. If the OCRC optimisation algorithm aims to find optimal operation speed of each relay separately, the OCRC problem becomes mathematically complex and impractical.…”

“…There are three main points in the setting and coordination of OC relays, high speed operation of relay, selectivity which means that each relay should operate only for the faults occurring in the corresponding protection zone of the relay and reliability which means each relay must be appropriately backed up by some other relays. The mentioned concerns are considered in this paper to enhance the dependability of the protection system and consequently the security of the power system [20,21].…”

“…The presented method is analyzing networks as a whole [6][7][8]. By simulation of routinely sequences of fault and contingency scenarios bottlenecks due to dependability and security of the protection system can be revealed.…”
