Network Restoration for Next-Generation Communication and Computing Networks

Abstract: Network failures are undesirable but inevitable occurrences for most modern communication and computing networks. A good network design must be robust enough to handle sudden failures, maintain traffic flow, and restore failed parts of the network within a permissible time frame, at the lowest cost achievable and with as little extra complexity in the network as possible. Emerging next-generation (xG) communication and computing networks such as fifth-generation networks, software-defined networks, and interne… Show more

“…As discussed in a previous contribution Carpitella et al [8], implementing strategies aimed at protecting from disruptions is the most important objective to be pursued for effectively managing complex networks [4,29,36,43]. Moreover, the adaptation capability of networks should be enhanced with respect to possible variations of initial established conditions, not necessarily facing disruption, but with the objective of increasing communication and information exchange through the network.…”

“…The modern commercial cellular networks need to provide high reliability and must achieve extremely fast restoration times in case one or more network elements fail . Reliability is very important especially for the next generation 5G networks, where different use cases require high bit rates with very low latency.…”

“…A network failure is defined as an unpredictive and forced temporary modification in the network that impacts the actual design of traffic and always results in capacity degradation of the affected links . There are several categories of network failures: Link failures : a link in the network fails; Node failures : there is a failure of a network equipment; Single failures : a single fault occurs at a time; Multiple failures : multiple faults occur nearly at the same time …”

“…Awoyemi et al [49] forecast the necessity to build and include enhanced network restoration models into their architecture. This research conducted a thorough investigation into network restoration strategies which are being created to mitigate network failures in present and upcoming 5G networks.…”
