First and foremost, I owe my deepest gratitude to my supervisor, Professor Xie Lihua, whose encouragement, professional guidance and support from the initial to the final level enabled me to develop an understanding of the subject. His patient and insightful discussions are greatly appreciated. Without his great enthusiastic help, I would not be able to complete this thesis. It is his rigorous scholarship and generous humanity that teaches me how to become a well qualified researcher. I am also thankful to my co-supervisor, Dr Xiao Wendong, for his valuable guidance and kindly help in my PhD study. He also supervised my master study when I was in China. What I appreciated most were the many opportunities and the freedom he has offered that allowed me to find the research topics I am most interested in. His expertized suggestions have been great motivations for my academic work. I would like to show my gratitude to the fellow students and friends of Sensor Network Lab who helped and supported me in these years. In particular, I valued the close discussions with Liu Shuai, Xiao Nan, You Keyou, Hu Jinwen, Yang Zai and Yu Chengpu who helped me to understand quite a lot of critical problems. I must also acknowledge the research scholarship I received from the Nanyang Technological University when the research work was carried out in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. In the end, I owe a lot of thanks to my parents and my sisters for their continuous presence, support and encouragement, and my wife, Wu Xinghua, for her love and taking care of me every step of the way.
