This article explores how social network dynamics may have reduced the spread of HIV-1 infection among people who inject drugs during the early years of the epidemic. Stochastic, discrete event, agent-based simulations are used to test whether a “firewall effect” can arise out of self-organizing processes at the actor level, and whether such an effect can account for stable HIV prevalence rates below population saturation. Repeated simulation experiments show that, in the presence of recurring, acute, and highly infectious outbreaks, micro-network structures combine with the HIV virus’s natural history to reduce the spread of the disease. These results indicate that network factors likely played a significant role in the prevention of HIV infection within injection risk networks during periods of peak prevalence. They also suggest that social forces that disturb network connections may diminish the natural firewall effect and result in higher rates of HIV.

The design and optimization of a communication network is a complex task, because it involves a lot of factors. The two most important factors are the network cost and the communications delay. We have tackled this NP-hard multi-objective optimization problem using two metaheuristics not used before: NSGA-II and SPEA-II, demonstrating that SPEA-II offers better results than NSGA-II. In order to facilitate the programming tasks, we have used the PISA framework. This paper proposes also a novel PISA parallelization based on MPI that allows distributing work load between computer cluster nodes, increasing thus the productivity.Communication networks; multio-objetive optimization; metaheuristics; PISA framework; parallelism.

Abstract. Cyber-security refers to all approaches to protect cyberspace against cyber-attacks. In order to identify vulnerabilities and develop countermeasures against cyber-attacks, we should be able to reenact both cyber-attacks and defenses. Simulations can be useful for the reenactment by overcoming its limitations including high risk and cost. However, it is difficult to model a variety cyber-attacks making use of pre-developed simulation models, because there is a lack of theoretical basis for modeling cyber-security simulations. In addition, because most simulation models are developed according to their own simulation purposes, it is very difficult to use them as primitives for modeling of new behaviors of cyber-attacks. In this paper, we propose a method for defining behavior primitives for developing flexible attack scenarios by combining the primitives considering flows of cyber-attacks and defenses. We also develop the scenario as simulation models and the models can be executed on the discrete event simulation system. To elicit a new scenario all modeler need to do is to choose primitives from pools and combine them considering simulation purposes and security issues. To extract the possible primitive behaviors, we have analyzed and abstracted all attack patterns of CAPEC (Common Attack Pattern Enumeration and Classification) database.
