Network Map of Adverse Health Effects Among Victims of Intimate Partner Violence

Abstract: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious problem with devastating health consequences. Screening procedures may overlook relationships between IPV and negative health effects. To identify IPV-associated women's health issues, we mined national, aggregated de-identified electronic health record data and compared female health issues of domestic abuse (DA) versus non-DA records, identifying terms significantly more frequent for the DA group. After coding these terms into 28 broad categories, we developed a n… Show more

“…EHR databases contain records of clinicians’ diagnoses and findings on patient visits. Therefore, EHR data is different from self-report or survey-based data, in that the information is provided by a third party who is an expert [ 23 ]. EHR databases utilize Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine Clinical Terms (SNOMED-CT) and International Classification of Diseases (ICD-9) as well [ 23 ], making it easier to accurately identify and associate diagnoses [ 23 ].…”

SNOMED-CT is an extensive standardized clinical terminology, which presents a language for clinical content and improves communication for clinical documentation, sharing, and exchange of information.…”

“…Studies indicate a strong association between IPV and an increase in the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) because persistent stress contributes directly to the pathogenesis of cardiovascular function. 2,3,[6][7][8][9][10][11][12] CVD is the number one silent killer in women but only 13% perceive it as a health threat 1,3,5,10 Women who have experienced IPV engage in coping strategies that pose negative health effects, such as smoking and poor nutrition, which potentiate the long-term negative impact/risk for CVD. 3,[6][7][8][9] Although some researchers theorize that inflammatory/hormonal cascades are pivotal in the development of significant health disparities such as CVD in victims of IPV, the exact mechanism(s) are still undetermined.…”
