Network condition and application‐based data adaptive intelligent message routing in vehicular network

Summary The arrival of cloud computing technology promises innovative solutions to the problems inherent in existing vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) networks. Because of the highly dynamic nature of these networks in crowded conditions, some network performance improvements are needed to anticipate and disseminate reliable traffic information. Although several approaches have been proposed for the dissemination of data in the vehicular clouds, these approaches rely on the dissemination of data from conventional clouds to vehicles, or vice versa. However, anticipating and delivering data, in a proactive way, based on query message or an event driven has not been defined so far by these approaches. Therefore, in this paper, a VANET‐Cloud layer is proposed for traffic management and network performance improvements during congested conditions. For the traffic management, the proposed layer integrates the benefits of the connected sensor network (CSN) to collect traffic data and the cloud infrastructure to provide on‐demand and automatic cloud services. In this work, traffic services use a data exchange mechanism to propagate the predicted data using a fuzzy aggregation technique. In the evaluation phase, simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed VANET‐Cloud layer to dramatically improve traffic safety and network performance as compared with recent works.

A stable and reliable data dissemination scheme based on intelligent forwarding in VANETs

Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) have gained incredible attention because of their applications in safety, commercial uses, and traffic management. However, the dynamic topology changes caused by the high speed of vehicles raise many challenges for the effective data dissemination in vehicular applications.In this paper, with the objective to solve the problem of frequent disconnection during data delivery, we propose a novel, intelligent forwarding-based stable and reliable data dissemination scheme. First, link stability is described mathematically, by which vehicle chooses the next forwarding node. Then, a greedy algorithm is presented to transmit the data from source to destination. A separate recovery algorithm is also designed to resolve the intermediate link breakage problem. The performance of the proposed method is analyzed by performing extensive network and traffic simulations with respect to various indexes such as latency, packet delivery ratio (PDR), and throughput. Compared with the state-of-the-art protocols, the proposed method under varying density improves the average PDR and throughput by 31.55% and 25.30%, respectively. The inter-vehicle and roadside communication networks of VANETs have gained importance because of its usage in many applications all over the world. Road safety, traffic control, and infotainment are the promising applications of vehicular communication. Vehicle and roadside unit (RSU) act as intelligent devices for data collection from the environment by using effective routing protocols and then transmitting the data to other devices connected to the Internet and cloud. VANETs support two distinct communication scenarios: vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication. In V2V, vehicles exchange information with one another, and in V2I, vehicles uses information provided by nearest roadside components. The architecture of vehicular communication is shown in Figure 1. Recently, the fast growth of communication technology has led to the design and implementation of different types of networks in different environments. One of these remarkable networks is vehicular ad hoc network (VANET).The ubiquitous connectivity among vehicles is possible through VANET in the absence of fixed infrastructure. Moreover, it provides safety and comfort to people sitting in the vehicles. In this regard, collecting information from vehicles that are moved constantly is an essential challenge. To develop an efficient method for data collection in the VANET, some parameters must be considered such as data aggregation, latency, packet delivery ratio, packet loss, scalability, security, transmission overhead, and vehicle density. Since data collection has a significant importance in the VANET, the aim of this study is to investigate the existing methods and describe the types of important issues and challenging problems that can be addressed in data collection in the VANET. The data collection techniques are investigated in four primary groups, namely, topology-based, cluster-based, geocast-based, and fog-based.Also, the mentioned parameters are important to compare all of the presented techniques.
