Network Architecture of Bidirectional Visible Light Communication and Passive Optical Network

Abstract: Network architectures to combine the fiber network outside the building and the visible light communication (VLC) access network inside the building are important for effectively distributing the high-capacity data to different users. In this paper, we propose a bidirectional network combining the VLC access network and the time-wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (TWDM-PON). Orthogonal frequency division multiplexed modulation is used since it offers high spectral efficiency for both the T… Show more

“…The signal received by BS 1 through b 1 is calculated in (22), shown at the top of the page. The signals received by BS 7 and BS 8 from b 7 and b 8 are presented in (23) and (24), respectively. In (22)-(24), P bj = K j P a is the power allocated to b j , with K j as the corresponding power control coefficient.…”

“…In [22], Wang et al proposed an indoor VLC-based LAN architecture where optical BSs are connected to the core network via single mode fiber links. Furthermore, to enable multi-Gbits/s connectivity based on optical fiber, the integration of a passive optical network (PON) architecture with VLC was proposed [23].…”

“…Most of the MA schemes in wireless communication such as time division multiple access (TDMA), frequency division multiple access (FDMA), code division multiple access (CDMA) and orthgonal frequency domian multiple access (OFDMA) have already been widely investigated for indoor VLC [7][8][9]. OFDMA has high spectrum efficiency and system capacity, which has been adopted for the fourth generation wireless communications and also widely investigated as a promising technique for coherent optical communications and passive optical network [10][11][12][13].…”

“…The all‐optical VPN concept was introduced several years since with an aim to avoid the limits of electronic‐to‐optical and optical‐to‐electronic conversions . A high majority of the existing solutions were proposed in the context of passive optical networks (PONs) . They focused on the reliable transportation of the signal to the intended user without ensuring protection against optical security threats.…”

“…[16][17][18] A high majority of the existing solutions were proposed in the context of passive optical networks (PONs). [19][20][21][22] They focused on the reliable transportation of the signal to the intended user without ensuring protection against optical security threats. In the work of Kim et al, 16 the authors proposed an all-optical VPN architecture using an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM)-based long-reach PON.…”
