Network Analysis of Open Innovation

Abstract: The way people innovate and create new ideas and bring them to the market is undergoing a fundamental change from closed innovation to open innovation. Why and how do firms perform open innovation? Firms’ open innovation is measured through the levels of firms’ joint patent applications. Next, we analyze network structures and characters of firms’ joint patent applications such as betweenness and degree centrality, structure hole, and closure. From this research, we drew conclusio… Show more

“…Fourth, global open innovation as a new emerging driving force will play a further important role in future geo-economic development. It covers regional open innovation [38], complex innovation eco-systems [39], open sustainable innovation [40], global innovation network and territorial innovation system [41,42], globalization of collaborative R & D [43], etc. Open innovation can enhance networking innovative stakeholders and regional R&D activity [44], conquer the growth limits of capitalism [45], facilitate interconnections between countries and make progress in regional innovation policy and entrepreneurial eco-systems [46].…”

“…There are several examples of simulation research in social science, such as a simple agent model of an epidemic, a stochastic cellular automata model of innovation diffusion, and an agent-based simulation of policy-induced diffusion of smart meters [28][29][30]. Among the simulation models, there are diverse levels such as technology adoption at the national level, knowledge transfer at the economic level, or diffusion of a residential photovoltaic system in Italy at the national level, for example [31][32][33][34] x , is created at the time that t 1 decays as time goes by, so that at time t 2 , the performance becomes O (t 1 )…”

“…Also, this cohesiveness may improve their spirit of cooperation or team work which would motivate their collectivism. During this process, their action of pursue the assistance of their co-works can be also viewed as a type of open innovation because they tried to integrate the resource outside themselves to reduce the uncertainty and complexity (Yun, Jeong, & Park, 2016) while trying to create greater values.…”
