Network Analysis of Acupuncture Points Used in the Treatment of Low Back Pain

Abstract: Background. The appropriate selection of acupoints is fundamental to obtain a therapeutic effect from clinical acupuncture. Objective. Using a network analysis method, we investigated the acupoints that are combined to treat low back pain (LBP). Methods. To analyze the patterns of the combinations of acupoints, we used acupoint information from clinical trials to calculate the modified mutual information (MI) value, integrated these data, and visualized the network. Results. Based on the highest MI values, we … Show more

“…Furthermore, we hypothesize that local acupuncture inhibited the dental noxious stimuli avoiding a consecutive trigeminal neural signaling, which can be explained by the gate control theory [16,19]. Therefore, there is a need for a new approach into the acupoint selection underlying the treatment for a better understanding of it therapeutic benefits [28].…”

“…As in previous research, the sham acupoints were located in the middle of the lateral deltoid muscle, in a region distant from most meridians [27]. The selection of acupoints was based on two of a total of three principles that are used commonly by practitioners indicating that: local acupoints selection (near the symptoms area), distant acupoints selection (along the meridian) and also based on symptom differentiation [28]. Likewise, the mice trans-positional acupoint system was followed, as previously described [52], ( Figure S1).…”

“…[1][2][3][4] Acupuncture points are generally located along these meridians and, when stimulated, are thought to restore normal circulation of qi to achieve balance and cure disease. [5][6][7][8] Acupuncture holds a long history in China, where it continues to be regularly used independently and as an adjunct to modern medicine to treat a broad range of diseases, including dermatologic disorders. Over the past few decades, the interest in acupuncture has expanded to other countries, including the United States, because of the growing popularity of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM).…”
