Purpose The purpose of this study is to enhance the understanding of the complete process of framing and implementing operational excellence in the pharmaceutical industry to ensure higher regulatory compliance. Design/methodology/approach A literature search was conducted using preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses guidelines. Strategies were set with different keywords and certain assessment criteria for the inclusion and exclusion of articles. A total of 46 articles were considered for a full review. Findings This study describes the impact of implementing operational excellence in day-to-day operations and the driving forces to achieve the same. Seven commonly used enablers are described can be used in combination to develop and validate an assessment model. Case studies are summarized to schematize operational excellence programs for the scope of their industry. Research limitations/implications This study is limited to Indian pharmaceutical manufacturers. It is implied toward small-scale manufacturers. It can be further extended to manufacturers from other regions. Practical implications This study guides quality assurance managers, regulatory agencies and other top management to implement operational excellence to ensure higher regulatory compliance. It guides to develop a roadmap to operational excellence in their scope. This study is applicable to any manufacturing industry bound to comply with pharmaceutical regulatory standards. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, at the time of publication, there are regulatory guidelines and some articles on various key enablers to achieve operational excellence. There is no published systematic review on achieving regulatory compliance by using operational excellence.

Moving Beyond Business as Usual Toward Regenerative Business Practice in Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises

Environmental degradation is a complex global challenge requiring the urgent attention of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which are collectively responsible for a large proportion of global pollution. For those SMEs who are still thinking about sustainability at the level of the organization and reducing its environmental damage, there must be an immediate shift in SME strategy and operations to consider planetary systems and practices that can regenerate ecosystems critical for the business's success. Responding to this urgent need, the authors were keen to identify how SMEs could move from “doing less bad” to “doing more good,” as a critically needed shift toward “regenerative business practice.” Using two case studies of Australian manufacturing sector SMEs already self-identified as regenerative business practices, their transition pathways and current operations were explored for insights and lesson learning that could be used to empower other SMEs. Collected interview data revealed three themes of priority during the two SMEs' journeys: (1) Organization and Nature conviviality; (2) Organizational freedom to innovate; and (3) Organizational innovative outlook. The SMEs' experiences were also explored in relation to an “Action Framework for Regenerative Business” developed by the authors. The framework draws on Stewardship Theory together with a set of “Principles and Strategies of Regenerative Business” for SMEs to consider their current operations and identify opportunities for their next steps accordingly. Such directed actions are imperative to move away from just “reducing pollution” to “restoring planetary systems,” demonstrating truly responsible consumption and production. Within the framework the authors add “advocate” to the existing stewardship roles of “doers,” “donors” and “practitioners,” which acknowledges the importance of this role in enabling SMEs to shift practices; in this case to regenerative business practice.

The widespread adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies has drastically increased the breadth and depth of attack surfaces in networked systems, providing new mechanisms for the intrusion. In the context of smart-world critical infrastructures and cyber-physical systems, the rapid adoption of the IoT systems and infrastructures without thorough consideration for the risks and vulnerabilities has the potential for catastrophic damage to the privacy, safety, and security of individuals and corporations. While the IoT systems have the potential to increase productivity, accountability, traceability, and efficiency, their potential weaknesses are also more abundant. In this paper, we provide critical consideration of the security of the IoT systems as applied to smart-world critical infrastructures. Particularly, we carry out a detailed assessment of vulnerabilities in IoT-based critical infrastructures from the perspectives of applications, networking, operating systems, software, firmware, and hardware. In addition, we highlight the three key critical infrastructure IoT-based cyber-physical systems, namely the smart transportation, smart manufacturing, and smart grid. Moreover, we provide a broad collection of attack examples upon each of the key applications. Furthermore, we introduce a case study, in which we assess the impacts of potential attacks on critical IoT-based systems, using the smart transportation system as an example. Finally, we provide a set of best practices and address the necessary steps to enact countermeasures for any generic IoT-based critical infrastructure system. INTRODUCTION Advances in information communication technologies have given rise to the Internet of Things (IoT), which will play an increasingly important role in our daily lives [1]-[3]. In IoT, the massive number of deployed IoT devices (sensors, actuators, etc.) will be connected to collect data related to objects in critical infrastructures, including city and government, industrial manufacturing, energy, transportation, healthcare, and public safety infrastructures, among others, supporting numerous smart-world systems. The examples of such systems are smart manufacturing, smart cities, smart grid, smart transportation, smart home, and smart health systems, to name a few [4]-[11].
