The use of unmanned aerial vehicles for detailed mapping of ecosystems has become increasingly important in recent years. As one of the main terrestrial carbon reserves, peatland ecosystems are of the great interest in obtaining highly detailed orthophotoplans. At the same time, there is a lack of publications devoted to the total carbon dioxide fluxes in each type of bog microforms. This paper presents the results of our study, which aimed to develop methods for mapping peatland microlandscapes and for estimation of integral carbon dioxide fluxes between the peatland surface and the atmosphere. Based on a highly detailed orthophotoplan compiled using unmanned aerial vehicles, we assessed the areas of major microform groups (swamps, hollows, and ridges) in a bog located in the Central Forest State Nature Biosphere Reserve (European Russia). The classification accuracy ranged from 79% to 93%. The areas of ridges, hollows, and swamps were 0.16 km 2 , 0.32 km 2 , and 0.12 km 2 , respectively. To make an integral estimation of carbon dioxide fluxes, we used earlier data on carbon dioxide emissions (ecosystem respiration), uptake (gross ecosystem exchange), and balance (net ecosystem exchange) measured by soil chamber method on representative experimental plots of respective microform types. After recalculating fluxes to areas of microforms, the integral values for different classes in the summer seasons of 2014, 2016 and 2017 were 15-91 kg CO 2 × h-1 for ecosystem respiration, 21-190 kg CO 2 × h-1 for gross ecosystem exchange, and from-122 kg CO 2 × h-1 to 41 kg CO 2 × h-1 for net ecosystem exchange. The results of the study confirmed that highly detailed orthophotoplans, obtained with the use of unmanned aerial vehicles, make it possible to distinguish the boundaries of such bog microforms as swamps, hollows and ridges with a high accuracy, despite the presence of some errors in the classification. The study of the structural and functional organisation of the bog should be carried out with considering its seasonal and interannual dynamics as well as all microform types.

Abstract. Northern peatlands represent one of the largest carbon pools in the biosphere, but the carbon they store is increasingly vulnerable to perturbations from climate and land-use change. Meteorological observations taken directly at peatland areas in Siberia are unique and rare, while peatlands are characterized by a specific local climate. This paper presents a hydrological and meteorological dataset collected at the Mukhrino peatland, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug – Yugra, Russia, over the period of 8 May 2010 to 31 December 2019. Hydrometeorological data were collected from stations located at a small pine–shrub–Sphagnum ridge and Scheuchzeria–Sphagnum hollow at ridge–hollow complexes of ombrotrophic peatland. The monitored meteorological variables include air temperature, air humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind speed and direction, incoming and reflected photosynthetically active radiation, net radiation, soil heat flux, precipitation (rain), and snow depth. A gap-filling procedure based on the Gaussian process regression model with an exponential kernel was developed to obtain continuous time series. For the record from 2010 to 2019, the average mean annual air temperature at the site was −1.0 ∘C, with the mean monthly temperature of the warmest month (July) recorded as 17.4 ∘C and for the coldest month (January) −21.5 ∘C. The average net radiation was about 35.0 W m−2, and the soil heat flux was 2.4 and 1.2 W m−2 for the hollow and the ridge sites, respectively. The presented data are freely available through Zenodo (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4323024, Dyukarev et al., 2020), last access: 15 December 2020) and can be used in coordination with other hydrological and meteorological datasets to examine the spatiotemporal effects of meteorological conditions on local hydrological responses across cold regions.

The peatlands of the West Siberian Lowlands, comprising the largest pristine peatland area of the world, have not previously been covered by continuous measurement and monitoring programs. The response of peatlands to climate change occurs over several decades. This paper summarizes the results of peatland carbon balance studies collected over ten years at the Mukhrino field station (Mukhrino FS, MFS) operating in the Middle Taiga Zone of Western Siberia. A multiscale approach was applied for the investigations of peatland carbon cycling. Carbon dioxide fluxes at the local scale studied using the chamber method showed net accumulation with rates from 110, to 57.8 gC m−2 at the Sphagnum hollow site. Net CO2 fluxes at the pine-dwarf shrubs-Sphagnum ridge varied from negative (−32.1 gC m−2 in 2019) to positive (13.4 gC m−2 in 2017). The cumulative May-August net ecosystem exchange (NEE) from eddy-covariance (EC) measurements at the ecosystem scale was −202 gC m−2 in 2015, due to the impact of photosynthesis of pine trees which was not registered by the chamber method. The net annual accumulation of carbon in the live part of mosses was estimated at 24–190 gC m−2 depending on the Sphagnum moss species. Long-term carbon accumulation rates obtained by radiocarbon analysis ranged from 28.5 to 57.2 gC m−2 yr−1, with local extremes of up to 176.2 gC m−2 yr−1. The obtained estimates of various carbon fluxes using EC and chamber methods, the accounting for Sphagnum growth and decomposition, and long-term peat accumulation provided information about the functioning of the peatland ecosystems at different spatial and temporal scales. Multiscale carbon flux monitoring reveals useful new information for forecasting the response of northern peatland carbon cycles to climatic changes.
