“…When choosing nest-sites, birds must consider the proximity of feeding areas, shelter and protection or camouflage against predators. In the case of colonial birds, socio-biological factors must be added which are strongly influenced by the relative position of the nest within a colony and the distance to the neighbouring nests (Cuervo, 2004). However, the parameters affecting nesting places vary between different waterbird species.…”

“…Black-winged Stilt nests were located closer to the water edge than those of Gull-billed Terns and random points. Therefore, areas close to the water edge seem to be more suitable for this species (Cuervo, 2004;Ashoori, 2011). This suggests that Blackwinged Stilts choose nesting locations closer to the water edge than Gull-billed Tern, because they have developed mechanisms to minimize reproductive failure from being flooded (Cuervo, 2004).…”

“…In some other studied Black-winged Stilt colonies, nests were made of a mixture of mud and plant materials; mud was important material for construction of nests very close to the water edge in this species (Cuervo, 2004;Ashoori, 2011). Black-winged Stilts built their nests mainly from dense vegetation or shallow scrape and were composed of short pieces marsh vegetation at other breeding colony western Iran (Barati et al, 2012) and placed in on bare mud or in sparse vegetation or on sandy areas in AghGol.…”

“…Broods located at the periphery are often more exposed to predation (Hamilton 1971). Moreover, individuals that locate their nests in places threatened by environmental factors, such as floods, risk the loss of a brood (Lauro & Burger 1989, Cuervo 2004.…”
