Nerve induced responses and force–velocity relations of regenerated detrusor muscle after subtotal cystectomy in the rat

Abstract: (1): A regional difference exists in pharmacological properties of control detrusor, with a considerable contractile response to stimulation remaining in the supratrigonal muscle after simultaneous cholinergic, adrenergic, and purinergic blockade. (2): The new detrusor was functionally well innervated with no supersensitivity to muscarinic stimulation. (3): The newly formed bladder body had pharmacological properties specific for the supratrigonal segment from which it had developed. (4): There was no regional… Show more

“…In addition, the presence of a response to electrical field stimulation indicated innervation of newly formed tissue. This 1108 agrees with an earlier study by Frederiksen et al (2004) in which whole mount staining of acetylcholinesterase revealed the pattern of nerves in newly formed detrusor.…”

“…The idea that the bladder tissue formed spontaneously after cystectomy is similar to that which remains was proposed by Frederiksen et al (2004) who described the pharmacology of regenerating bladder. Fifteen weeks after STC in female rats, transverse strips were excised from the bladder body and were exposed to contractile stimuli, taking into account the proximity of the strip to the trigone.…”

“…The regeneration of the new bladder is to some extent attained by distension of the original base of the bladder. This is more pronounced in the rabbit [25] than the rat [26] bladder. Interestingly, the newly developed detrusor retains some of the pharmacological properties specific for the bladder base and this is more evident in the rabbit [25] than the rat [26] bladder.…”

The distribution of the nerve trunks in the new detrusor has not been studied until now.…”
