Nerve growth factor in medium conditioned by embryonic chicken heart cells

Abstract: The present report demonstrates that embryonic chicken heart cells in culture release different nerve growth promoting factors to their culture medium, one which is biologically and immunologically similar to mouse gland beta NGF. Serum-free heart cell conditioned medium thus promoted neurite outgrowth from sympathetic and ciliary ganglia and supported survival of dissociated ciliary neurons. The addition of affinity purified antibodies against mouse beta NGF does substantially but not completely inhibit the f… Show more

“…It is obvious that antibodies to mouse NGF at higher concentrations than needed to block mouse NGF do in fact in many cases inhibit the biological activity of NGF from a number of other species, including human and chicken NGF (Norrgren et al, 1980;Norrgren and Ebendal, 1986;Belew and Ebendal, 1986;Hallbook et al, 1988). However, there is variation between different anti-mouse NGF antibodies in the ability to block heterologous NGFs (Dimberg and , and in some instances the blocking ability is nearly as good as the ability to block mouse NGF.…”

“…against mouse NGF can cross-react with a chicken form of NGF Young et al, 1975;Ebendal et al, 1982;Norrgren and Ebendal, 1986;Abrahamson et al, 1986Abrahamson et al, , 1987b. Furthermore, these studies demonstrate that chicken NGF shares with mouse NGF not only common antigenic determinants but also similar physicochemical and biological properties.…”
