Mitochondria are dynamic organelles that constantly undergo fission, fusion, and movement. Increasing evidence indicates that these dynamic changes are intricately related to mitochondrial function, suggesting that mitochondrial form and function are linked. Calcium (Ca2+) is one signal that has been shown to both regulate mitochondrial fission in various cells types and stimulate mitochondrial enzymes involved in ATP generation. However, although Ca2+ plays an important role in the adult cardiac muscle cells for excitation-metabolism coupling, little is known about whether Ca2+ can regulate their mitochondrial morphology. Therefore, we tested the role of Ca2+ in regulating cardiac mitochondrial fission. We found that neonatal and adult cardiomyocyte mitochondria undergo rapid and transient fragmentation upon a thapsigargin (TG)- or KCl-induced cytosolic Ca2+ increase. The mitochondrial fission protein, DLP1, participates in this mitochondrial fragmentation, suggesting that cardiac mitochondrial fission machinery may be regulated by intracellular Ca2+ signaling. Moreover, the TG-induced fragmentation was also associated with an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, suggesting that activation of mitochondrial fission machinery is an early event for Ca2+-mediated ROS generation in cardiac myocytes. These results suggest that Ca2+, an important regulator of muscle contraction and energy generation, also dynamically regulates mitochondrial morphology and ROS generation in cardiac myocytes.

The fluorine atom provides an exciting tool for diverse spectroscopic and imaging applications using Magnetic Resonance. The organic chemistry of fluorine is widely established and it can provide a stable moiety for interrogating many aspects of physiology and pharmacology in vivo. Strong NMR signal, minimal background signal and exquisite sensitivity to changes in the microenvironment have been exploited to design and apply diverse reporter molecules. Classes of agents are presented to investigate gene activity, pH, metal ion concentrations (e.g., Ca(2+), Mg(2+), Na(+)), oxygen tension, hypoxia, vascular flow and vascular volume. In addition to interrogating speciality reporter molecules, (19)F NMR may be used to trace the fate of fluorinated drugs, such as chemotherapeutics (e.g., 5-fluorouracil, gemcitabine), anesthetics (e.g., isoflurane, methoxyflurane) and neuroleptics. NMR can provide useful information through multiple parameters, including chemical shift, scalar coupling, chemical exchange and relaxation processes (R1 and R2). Indeed, the large chemical shift range (approximately 300 ppm) can allow multiple agents to be examined, simultaneously, using NMR spectroscopy or chemical shift selective imaging.

Female social groups have been instrumental in the progress of nations and communities. In Cameroon they have been in existence for quite a long time, taking several forms and shapes. 1 Basically, they are voluntary groups formed by women related by an affinity, who pull their resources together for mutual benefits. These groups are always created in response to evolving circumstances, challenges and most often adjust to the ever demanding needs of society. The role of female social groups has been recognized as an important factor in sustaining long term and socio-economic changes. 2 The emergence, diversification and modernization of female social groups in Nso' a very patriarchal setup in the Cameroon Grasslands, is a case in this direction. Nso' is a highly structured society in the Cameroon Grasslands with a current population of about 307,758 inhabitants. 3 In the social set-up, gender division of roles is quite typical with both men and women playing crucial and complementary roles in the socio-economic and political life of the community. It is in this direction that the women (like their male counterparts) in most cases created social groups to respond to their ever increasing needs. Expounding on social formations of this character, Kropp and Suran maintain that a female social group is an informal association of some fifteen to twenty people, mostly women from the community, organized and controlled by the members, based on solidarity, reciprocity, common interest and resource pooling. 4 Mehta, Mishra and Singh on their part are not concerned about the number of persons involved but the objectives that bring them together.
