Nephron ultrastructural alterations induced by zinc oxide nanoparticles: an electron microscopic study

Abstract: Due to their unique properties, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are invested in many industries, commercial products, and nanomedicine with potential risk for human health and the environment. The present study aims to focus on alterations that might be induced by ZnO NPs in the nephron ultrastructure. Male Wister Albino rats were subjected to ZnO NPs at a daily dose of 2 mg/kg for 21 days. Kidney biopsies were processed to transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and ultrastructural pathology examinations. E… Show more

“…Mesangial cells are modified pericytes with phagocytic activity and capable of secreting inflammatory mediators. These cells have contractile features that play a crucial role in the regulation of the glomerular filtration rate by changing resistance in the glomerular tufts (Almansour et al, 2019). Mesangial hyperplasia was reported in renal injury including metabolic and immunological disorders (Metwaly and Al-Quraishy 2011).…”

“…Moreover, ZON could interact with cellular proteins resulting in cellular degenerative effects. The study revealed also deeply stained pyknotic nuclei which is attributed to oxidative stress mediated apoptosis [ 62 ]. This cytotoxic effect of ZON may be due to the intracellular ZON particles dissolution with subsequent increase in the cytosolic ionic zinc.…”
