Neotropical brown stink bug (Euschistus heros) resistance to methamidophos in Paraná, Brazil

Abstract: -The objective of this work was to evaluate the soybean neotropical brown stink bug (Euschistus heros) resistance to methamidophos through laboratory bioassays. Bioassays were carried out using populations of adults and nymphs of Euschistus heros in the last instar collected in soybean crops in Paraná State. Highest frequencies of genotypes resistant to methamidophos were observed in Alvorada do Sul, Toledo and Nova Santa Rosa, PR. Populations from Bela Vista do Paraíso, Araruna, Campo Mourão, Mariluz, Cascave… Show more

“…The Neotropical brown stink bug Euschistus heros (Fabricius, 1794) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) is a prominent pest of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) in Brazil (Sosa-Gómez and Silva, 2010). This pentatomid is largely responsible for the reduction in quality and weight of seeds (Corrêa-Ferreira and Azevedo, 2002).…”

“…The distribution of E. heros has increased in the past five years and, due to its increased populations, most insecticide applications are designed accordingly to manage this pest (Sosa-Gómez and Silva, 2010). However, populations of this pentatomid are difficult to manage using organophosphates (methamidophos, acephate, chlorpyrifos, and monocrotophos) or cyclodiene endosulfan (Sosa-Gómez et al, 2009).…”

“…This insect is a facultative migratory pest that can fly long distances in search of its host plants (Farrow and Daly, 1987). Inappropriate insecticide applications and their undesirable effects as well as the selection of individuals resistant not only to chemical insecticides but also to transgenic plants (Blanco et al, 2009;Sosa-Gomez and Silva, 2010;Bernardi et al, 2014;Bortolotto et al, 2014) lead to the need to investigate alternative pest control methods and strengthen integrated pest management (IPM) (Bueno et al, 2011a). Among the alternative methods, the exploitation of plant resistance to insects is considered ideal because this approach does not affect the environment, may be concomitantly used with other control methods, and does not require producers to deal with sophisticated technology (Smith, 2005;Seifi et al, 2013;Boiça Junior et al, 2015).…”
