Neopterin and other indicators of HIV progression in Zambian adults

Abstract: In this study, we assessed a possible correlation of CD4 counts with the low-cost progression markers neopterin, 132-microglobulin (B2M), total lymphocyte count (TLC) and hemoglobin, and we investigated associations between progression :narkers and clinical parameters in HIV -1 seropositive Zambians. Of 147 HIV-1 seropositive patients presenting to an outpatient clinic in Lusaka, blood was taken for CD4 counts, serum progression markers and full blood count. A detailed clinical history and medical examination … Show more

“…Another similar study by Bipath et al (2015) which states that neopterin can be a marker of disease progression and outcome of HIV / AIDS patients. In addition, the results are similar to previous studies by Hosp et al in Zambian (2000), but in that study, the periods were longer, patients were followed for a minimum of 3 months to 12 months, and measurements were taken of the initial neopterin levels and after 12 months (p <0.05) (4,20,21).…”

“…The current study revealed that the serum level of neopterin could be considered as a valuable biochemical marker for cellular immune response among the exposed smelter workers. Similarly, previous studies declared that neopterin levels were well correlated with counts of CD4+ and CD8+ T-cells and cytokines levels in the experimental populations (Hosp et al, 2000 andFrench et al, 2009).…”

“…This is in accordance with a recent retrospective marker validation study (ACTG 116B/117) showing that neopterin was the strongest predictor of disease progression in advanced HIV infection. 32 We have previously shown that neopterin and hemoglobin are highly correlated, 33 and anemia in HIV infection is partly attributable to chronic immune stimulation. 34 In European patients (Eurosida cohort), hemoglobin was an independent risk factor of death.…”
