Neoplastic and Nonneoplastic Lesions in Aging (C57BL/6N × C3H/HeN)F1 (B6C3F1) Mice2

Abstract: Neoplastic and nonneoplastic lesions in untreated (C57BL/6N x C3H/HeN)F1 (B6C3F1) mice used as controls in carcinogenesis tests were tabulated and evaluated. The most common neoplasms in 2,543 male mice were hepatocellular adenomas and carcinomas. In 2,522 female mice, common tumors were lymphomas, leukemias, pulmonary adenomas and carcinomas, hepatocellular adenomas and carcinomas, and pituitary adenomas. The risk of developing most neoplasms increased with the age of the mouse. Hepatocellular carcinomas meta… Show more

“…Most malignant lymphomas seemed to originate in the thymus, which is different from spontaneous lymphomas observed in this strain of mouse (10). The thymus was the most frequently and prominently affected organ and occasionally the only affected organ.…”

“…4,26,29 Enamel organ dysplasia, noted in most of the older mice, was previously recognized22 as a lesion that could lead to severe malformation of the teeth and subsequent death by inanition in old mice, but this lesion has been commonly overlooked in previous studies.…”

“…This model resembles those using chemical carcinogens to induce liver tumors in rats and choline deficiency and/or partial hepatectomy to enhance tumor development (19,31). Regarding the B(;C3F 1 mouse, it is worth pointing out that the appearance of the "spontaneous" liver nodules usually occur in animals older than one year (32) and that promoting conditions, such as CD diet, lowers that age to 6 months when the diet has been fed from weaning. These observations are even more impressive when one considers the putative pre-neoplastic hyperplastic foci that appear after 3 months on CD diet (17).…”
