“…This finding was unexpected because other workers have reported that neonatal TP treatment decreases adult sensitivity to OB as measured by the display of lordosis (Edwards & Thompson, 1970;Gerall & Kenney, 1970;Whalen, Luttge & Gorzalka, 1971). It is possible that the failure to replicate these previous findings with the present procedures was due to the fact that TP was given on day 4 of life which may have been too late.…”

“…Our data, indicating that neonatal castration [263] as well as neonatal androgenization that postpones sexual maturation, as evidenced by delayed vaginal opening [264,265] , delays the onset of thymic involution [Leposavic et al, in preparation] may speak in favor of this hypothesis. However, it has been demonstrated that neither cellularity of main thymocyte subsets (followed from age 3 to 10 months) nor overall thymic cellularity (followed from age 3 to 18 months) significantly differed at any point examined between hypogonadal mice and their normal HPG/Bm-hpg/hpg (hpg) littermates [51] .…”

“…It has subsequently been demonstrated that these masculinized rats have polyfollicular non-ovulatory ovaries devoid of corpora lutea and are permanently sterile (Gerall & Kenny, 1970;McDonald & Doughty, 1972). Behaviourally the androgenized female demonstrates enhanced male sexual behaviour (Baum, 1979).…”

“…TP is only effective when administered during the first 10 days post-parturition, implying the existence of a specific androgen-sensitive period in the female pup for the development of organizational effects (Barraclough, 1961). The resultant androgenized female has an increased body weight (Swanson & Van Der Werff Ten Bosch, 1963;Tartellin et al 1975), polyfollicular non-ovulatory ovaries devoid of corpora lutea (Gerall & Kenny, 1970;J Physiol 563.1 McDonald & Doughty, 1972), enhanced male sexual behaviour (Baum, 1979) and a failure to display the lordosis response when sexually active (Harris & Levine, 1965). It has been proposed that the morphological changes in the ovaries of masculinized rats result from disrupted gonadotrophin regulation by the CNS (Pfeiffer, 1936;Barraclough, 1962).…”
