“…In particular, neonatal pleural empyema caused by GAS is rare, with only three case reports in the literature since 1976. [5][6][7] Transmission modes have been reported in general as vertical transmission. 3 In the present case, the neonate's mother developed puerperal fever on the day of delivery, and GAS was isolated from the mother's vaginal culture.…”

“…5 Suspected etiologies for human neonatal pyothorax include transplacental infection due to maternal bacteremia, infection acquired during passage through an infected birth canal, and bacterial pneumonia. [21][22][23] The primary etiologic agents incriminated in human neonatal pyothorax include Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and b-hemolytic Streptococcus. 5 Treatment for human neonates with pyothorax includes either antibiotics alone, or antibiotics combined with thoracic drainage.…”

The reported spectrum of infections with GAS in the newborn includes omphalitis, peritonitis, skin infection, necrotizing fasciitis, toxic shock syndrome, pneumonia, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, septicemia and meningitis (1).…”
