Neonatal orbital abscess

Abstract: Orbital complications due to ethmoiditis are rare in neonates. A case of orbital abscess due to acute ethmoiditis in a 28-day-old girl is presented. A Successful outcome was achieved following antimicrobial therapy alone; spontaneous drainage of the abscess occurred from the lower lid without the need for surgery. From this case report, we intend to emphasize on eyelid retraction as a sign of neonatal orbital abscess, and to review all the available literature of similar cases.

“…Al-Salem et al ., recently highlighted eyelid retraction as a sign of neonatal orbital abscess and its subsequent spontaneous resolution following successful treatment as was seen in our case. [ 12 ] The eyelid retraction became apparent in our case on sixth day post-operatively after decrease in lid edema subsequent to treatment response. There was spontaneous subsidence of lid retraction in our case too.…”

“…It was recently suggested to be the major cause of late-onset sepsis in very-low birth weight infants admitted to neonatal intensive care units in the USA and UK [5][6][7]. Data from 2005 to 2018 suggested that up to 4.4% of very-low birth weight infants in China developed S. aureus bacteremia or meningitis and osteomyelitis, with an overall mortality of 19% to 30.5% [8][9][10][11][12]. Moreover, a recent meta-analysis showed that the risk of S. aureus colonization and infection in infants was 24.2 times higher than that in adults, indicating that infants were at high risk for S. aureus colonization [10,13].…”
