Neonatal Novelty-Induced Persistent Enhancement in Offspring Spatial Memory and the Modulatory Role of Maternal Self-Stress Regulation

Abstract: Development of spatial memory in the rat is influenced by both maternal and nonmaternal aspects of the postnatal environment. Yet it remains poorly understood how these two aspects of the postnatal environment interact to program offspring cognitive development. By considering the joint influence of neonatal environmental novelty and maternal self-stress regulation on the development of spatial memory function in Long-Evans hooded rats, we show a persistent neonatal novelty-induced enhancement in spatial refer… Show more

“…Instead, it is the case that mothers with good selfstress regulation will enable the pups to respond positively to novelty exposure. This sensitivity of the novelty exposure effect to the context of maternal self-stress regulation supports an important notion that the mother can function as both a binary "switch," setting the direction of the novelty exposure influence on her offspring (14), and a "dial" to set continuous and finer control of the magnitude of this novelty effect (17,18).…”

“…Recently, we reported for the same group of rats that neonatal novelty exposure and maternal self-stress regulation also similarly interact to influence offspring cognitive development (17). Therefore, we speculated that the early growth measure may be associated with early cognitive development.…”

“…An exception to the classical ERs is the GPER1 (111,208), which associates with PSD-95 in the dendritic spine and appears to couple estrogen action to membrane progestin receptors, 5HT 1A receptors, and corticotrophin releasing hormone (CRH1) receptors (35). Finally, it should be noted that rapid, nongenomic actions are recognized along with classical cell nuclear actions for all classes of steroid hormones: progestins (142,230), androgens (209), glucocorticoids (210,211), mineralocorticoids (98), and vitamin D (86).…”
