Neonatal near misses and associated factors among mother’s who give a live neonate at Hawassa City governmental hospitals, 2019: a facility based cross-sectional study design

Abstract: Background Neonatal near miss is a neonate who nearly died but survived from a severe complication occurred during pregnancy, birth or within 0–28 days of extra-uterine life. However, there is no available data that quantifies the magnitude of neonatal near miss (NNM) in Ethiopia where there is high prevalence of neonatal mortality. Therefore, this study is designed to provide information about the magnitude and associated factors of neonatal near miss among women who give a live birth at Hawas… Show more

“…Mode of delivery via cesarean section showed a significant association with NNM. This was in line with studies conducted in Brazil [13,24,32], South Africa [55], and Ethiopia [34,56].…”

“…In the current study, maternal occupation, non-governmental and private employment was significantly associated with a neonatal near miss. This is in line with the study conducted in Hawasa city [ 21 ]. This might be due to the adverse effects of occupational stress on fetal growth and development.…”

“…Mothers delivered through instrumental delivery were more likely to develop neonatal near-misses than spontaneous vaginal delivery. This finding was similar to studies conducted in different settings, in Brazil, Johannesburg, Southeast Brazil, Hawasa, northeast Brazil, Gamo and Gofa zones, Uganda, Ambo, Gurage Zone, Jima, Thailand, Morocco, and Ethiopia [10,12,18,[20][21][22][24][25][26][27][28][29][30]. This might be because most of the neonates indicated for instrumental delivery are due to abnormal labor progress, which affects the fetal outcomes, and maybe the professionals are not skilled enough, maybe the mothers are frightened by the indications that happen later in worse conditions for the fetuses.…”

“…8 However, the magnitude of NNM remained uncovered. [9][10][11][12][13] In addition, methodological limitations, such as non-random sampling 14,15 or use of secondary data, 16 may underestimate or overestimate NNM cases and made it difficult to generalize findings. In this study, we assessed the magnitude of NNM and its associated factors among neonates born in major public hospitals in Harari Region, Eastern Ethiopia.…”
