NeonatalTrichomonas vaginalisinfection: a case report and review of literature

Abstract: Neonatal infection with Trichomonas vaginalis is an unusual occurrence. We present a case of T. vaginalis found on routine urinalysis in a five-day-old neonate born at 29 weeks gestational age. The patient was treated with metronidazole and had complete resolution of the infection. This report discusses the significance of diagnosis and treatment of T. vaginalis in the neonate.

“…Vertical transmission is a phenomenon observed in many parasite and host species. Vertical transmission occurs by the transfer of the parasite from mother to offspring during pregnancy ( Toxoplasma gondii ), child birth ( Trichomonas vaginalis ) or lactation ( Toxocara canis ) [ 1 4 ]. Congenital infections may cause complications during pregnancy, miscarriages or foetal infections [ 5 , 6 ].…”

Genital TV infection is also diagnostic of sexual abuse and even in a child younger than 3 years should be reported to CPS.…”

“…11,1822 Interestingly, recent research linking trichomonas infections to prostate cancer in men has been accumulating and may add reasons to be more actively screen men for trichomonas. 2324 The availability of serological detection of circulating antibody to trichomonas may be an additional epidemiological tool for diagnosis of chronic infections, when only very limited amount of pathogens are released in urine or in vaginal secretions.…”
